Eighty years ago this winter, something special was happening in Colorado.
We were learning to love the sport of skiing. Colorado ski areas Monarch Mountain, Winter Park and Wolf Creek all trace their beginnings to the winter of 1939-40.
There are two types of skiers and riders. The first sleeps in, meanders over to the ski area, eats a leisurely breakfast in the lodge and boards the first chairlift around mid-morning. The second has been chasing first tracks and shredding powder runs since dawn.
It's been quite a while since we've talked about a decent snowstorm impacting the state. Remember back just before Halloween when there was record cold and record snow? And then, radio silence. Yeah, we all got excited about the approaching season and then our balloons all seemed to deflate amid weeks upon weeks of dry weather.
Howelsen Hill Ski Area is owned and operated by the City of Steamboat Springs and holds a unique place in the history of skiing. It has sent more skiers to international competition than any other area in North America. Come experience skiing history in the Yampa Valley.
