Telluride is back at the center of the snowboard universe with the only U.S. stop of theLG FIS Snowboard World Cup, December 15-17. Athletes, media, family and friends from around the world are here to take part in Snowboardcross (SBX) and Parallel Giant Slalom (PGS) for the third year in a row.
Americans participating in the event include two time Olympic gold medalist Seth Wescott (Sugarloaf, ME), three time X Games gold medalist Lindsey Jacobellis (Stratton, VT), six time X Games gold medalist Nate Holland (Squaw Valley, CA), Olympic athlete Graham Watanabe (Sun Valley, ID) and Olympic athlete and World Championship bronze medalist Nick Baumgartner (Iron River, MI).
The 2011-12 U.S. SBX Team will be announced on Saturday at the Telluride World Cup Closing Party, sending the team off to Europe to compete on this years tour.
We are once again thrilled to have the eyes of the snowboard universe back on Telluride, said Resort CEO Dave Riley. The World Cup is the pinnacle of winter snowsports competition, and Telluride is honored to be a member of this elite group of host resorts.
2010 Vancouver Olympic Snowboard Cross course designer, Jeff Ihaksi, has again been working with Tellurides snowmaking, grooming and terrain park teams to construct and fine tune this world-class course. Peter Foley, Head Coach for US Snowboarding, is also on hand to offer both his guidance and expertise.
Forty-eight men and 24 women have qualified for the SBX finals set for Friday, Dec. 16, including Telluride’s own Haegen Kearney.
The Parallel Giant Slalom (PGS) snowboard qualifier and finals will take place on Thursday, Dec. 15th on the top section of Misty Maiden, finishing just above Gorrono Ranch.
The World Cup festivities culminate on Saturday with the SBX Team race. Each team will consist of two riders from a country relay racing against three other teams. As a racer’s teammate crosses the finish, the second teammate starts.
Great spectating is available in the base area, from the Village Express Lift (4), and alongside the courses.
When the racing has completed on Saturday, it is time to celebrate with the announcement of the US National SBX Team and a send off celebration to the World Cup season in Europe.
