Steamboat holds a special place in my heart because I used to live there once upon a time. But during that time I never had the chance to go powdercat skiing.
Steamboat Powdercats has been operating up on Buffalo Pass since the 80s. What makes them unique is they don’t just run a cat up and down the backcountry, they have a handful of categories and types of outings that guests can take advantage of: a private cat, moonlight descents, scenic tours, avalanche awareness courses, and even kids, adaptive and women’s specific program.
So everyone knows that March is Colorado’s snowiest month. To make it even snowier for powder lovers, Steamboat Powdercats just launched a March Madness promotion with $75 off cat seats.
If you’ve never been cat skiing, put it on your bucket list. It’s like nothing youve done before. The cat itself is plush, warm, with big soft comfy seats. The guides are like bellmen at the Ritz: good looking and handling your skis with the greatest of care while sending you down untracked runs with the protective gestures of a parent teaching their kid how to ride a bike for the first time.
As if you need another excuse to get to Steamboat anyway; with trails covered in beautiful trademarked Champagne Powder, world class tree skiing and an event filled calendar this spring, I think that town alone won the Olympic medal count for USA.
A word of warning if you visit, you might fall in love with it as I did, and the next thing you know, a solid chunk of your life will have been blissfully spent in Ski Town USA-and youll never want to leave-and that’s probably ok.
