Frequently Asked Questions
Q: WHAT IS THE COLORADO 5TH GRADE PASSPORT?
A: It is a Colorado Ski Country USA (CSCUSA) program that allows every fifth grader in the state of Colorado the opportunity to ski and snowboard at 20 CSCUSA member resorts during the winter season. The program was established in 1996 and more than 200,000 kids have participated in the program since then. CSCUSA is the not-for-profit trade association representing the Colorado ski industry.
Q: WHAT'S THE POINT?
A: When asked to associate an activity with Colorado, most people said "skiing". However, many 10-year-olds growing up in Colorado are more likely to see the mountains on television than to experience them first-hand. The Colorado ski industry is determined to remove the barriers to enjoyment of mountain recreation. Skiing should be a rite of passage for every child lucky enough to be raised in Colorado, and this program will help make that happen. The program also helps young people stay physically active during winter months.
Q: HOW OFTEN CAN 5TH AND 6TH GRADE PASSPORT HOLDERS USE THEIR PASS?
A: The 5th Grade Passport provides 3 days of skiing or snowboarding at each of 20 participating Colorado resorts. That's 60 days of skiing or snowboarding! The 6th Grade Passport pass provides 4 days of skiing or snowboarding at EACH of 20 participating Colorado resorts, for a total of 80 days!! The 5th Grade Passport is FREE and the 6th Grade Passport is just $99.
Q: WHERE MAY I OBTAIN A PASS?
A: There are NO pick up or drop off locations, so you must apply online or send application/items for the pass through the mail. Your child's pass will come to you standard first class mail.
Q: WHEN WILL I BE ABLE TO APPLY?
A: The online application will be available by mid-August, and your child’s school should receive applications for the 5th Grade Passport by the end of September. If you would like to be notified as soon as the online applications becomes available, please visit www.coloradoski.com/passport/notification
Q: WILL MY INFORMATION AND EMAIL ADDRESS BE PROTECTED?
A: YES! The website is a secured site and your information will be protected. We do not share your personal information with anyone outside of Colorado Ski Country USA member resorts. All credit card transactions are made through an SSL and Authorize.net
Q: WILL YOU RUN OUT OF PASSES BEFORE I CAN SIGN UP?
A: Although quantities are limited, we do everything possible to get every child a pass. Our application deadline this year is January 31, 2014. Please register as soon as possible to ensure your child gets a pass.
Q: ONCE I HAVE MY PASS, HOW DO I USE IT?
A: When you get to the resort, take your child's pass card to the ticket office in order to obtain one child lift ticket per day. The resort will hole punch the back of the card to let you know how many days you have remaining.
Q: WHAT IF MY 5TH GRADER DOESN'T KNOW HOW TO SKI OR SNOWBOARD?
A: No problem. The Passport is for all fifth graders whether they know how to ski or not. Now is the perfect time to learn and for 5th graders that have never skied or snowboarded we have The First Class Program. This program provides 1 free lesson in January to 5th Grade Passport who have never skied or snowboarded. Resorts have excellent ski and snowboard schools, where taking a lesson from a pro will help your child get better faster!
Q: WHAT ABOUT EQUIPMENT AND LESSONS?
A: The 5th Grade Passport and 6th Grade Graduate Pass include coupons from member resorts and retailers for various discounts on equipment, lessons, lift tickets and other activities. Some coupons apply to other family members too.
Q: HOW MUCH DO THE PASSES COST?
A: That's the best news – for 5th graders, it's FREE. The only cost to receive the 5th Grade Passport is the cost of mailing the application and required materials. For 6th graders the price of $99 will be good while passes are offered.

Q: HOW DO I KNOW IF MY CHILD IS ELIGIBLE FOR THE FIRST CLASS PROGRAM?
A: All participants must first complete the 5th Grade Passport application process. Once your application is complete and your child’s 5th Grade Passport card is in the mail, we will use the information provided in the application to determine if your child is eligible for the First Class program. We will contact you via email if your child is eligible.
Q: ONCE I RECEIVE THE EMAIL SAYING MY CHILD IS ELIGIBLE, HOW DO I GET A LESSON VOUCHER?
A: The email will provide you with the phone number to call. Our customer service representatives will help you decide which resort is best for your family, based on availability. Once chosen, you will receive a voucher from that resort for one complimentary full-day beginner, level one group lesson and rental package.
Q: IF MY CHILD HAS SKIED OR SNOWBOARDED BEFORE AND DOESN’T NEED A LEVEL ONE LESSON, CAN WE STILL REQUEST TO PARTICIPATE IN THE PROGRAM?
A: No. These lessons are level one only and for children that have neither skied nor snowboarded. The lessons will be primarily on the magic carpet and bunny hills. If your child has some experience with either of those, they are not eligible to participate.
Q: IF MY CHILD IS NOT ELIGIBLE FOR THE FIRST CLASS PROGRAM, WHAT OTHER OPTIONS ARE THERE?
A: 20 of the Colorado Ski Country USA member resorts offer lessons at a variety of levels and are committed to teaching anyone who wants to improve. Please check ColoradoSki.com for resort deals and coupons.

Colorado Ski Country will then contact you via email if your child is eligible for the First Class program. Once you speak with Colorado Ski Country to pick the resort for your child’s first lesson, you will receive an electronic voucher to print within minutes.
Q: CAN I CHANGE THE RESORT I WOULD LIKE TO TAKE MY CHILD TO FOR THE FREE LESSON?
A: No. Once a voucher has been issued, it may not be reissued for another ski area. Each voucher is only valid at one ski area. Voucher is non-transferable and has no cash value.
Q: ONCE I HAVE MY VOUCHER, WHAT ELSE DO I NEED FOR MY FIRST DAY OF SKIING?
A: Equipment rental is also free and included for participants in the First Class program. Rentals include boots, skis and poles for skiers, or boots and snowboard for snowboarders. Rentals do not include clothing and accessories (goggles, hats, gloves, etc). Helmets are strongly recommended and, at some resorts, mandatory for children in ski school. Most resorts rent helmets and other items for a small daily fee. Please contact each resort prior to the lesson. Also visit our Learn to Ski and Snowboard page to find some tips on proper clothing for a day on the slopes.
