Denver, Colo. – February 29, 2012 – Colorado skiers and snowboarders welcomed leap day 2012 with fresh snow and deep powder. While every Colorado Ski Country USA (CSCUSA) resort received new snow, the two-day storm left totals of more than two feet in some areas.

The storm moved into Colorado and lingered over the southwest for 48 hours, leaving Purgatory at Durango Mountain Resort with 28 new inches, Wolf Creek Ski Area 27 inches and Silverton 24 inches. On the Western Slope, the two-day storm allowed Powderhorn to add 15 inches to its season total, and in the central mountains, Monarch and Sunlight benefited from 13 new inches, while Crested Butte, Aspen, Aspen Highlands, Buttermilk, Snowmass and Copper reported a fresh 12 inches for 48 hours. Just under a foot of snow accumulated during the past 48 hours at Telluride which saw 11 inches.

“We have not had conditions as good as this on February 29th in at least four years,” said Melanie Mills, president and CEO, Colorado Ski Country USA. “And I guarantee it’ll be another four years until we see powder conditions on February 29th this good again.”

Eldora amassed another nine and a half inches of powder, with Ski Cooper totaling an even nine. Winter Park gathered nearly nine inches over the last two days, measuring exactly 8.8 inches of new snow.

Steamboat, Arapahoe Basin and Loveland each compiled seven inches of powder from the multi-day storm. Howelsen Hill was left with five inches, SolVista Basin at Granby Ranch and Echo Mountain both reported three inches.

The new snow adds to the excitement of spring skiing with resorts prepared to welcome guests with fun events, free concerts, family activities and a smattering of deals. Skiers and snowboarders are reminded to practice safe skiing and follow the guidelines outlined in Your Responsibility Code, such as always stay in control, observe all posted signs and warnings, and be aware of other skiers around you.
